The Sangat at the Sangeet Samellan

22 September 2002: Tributes were paid to “hazoori ragi” Sant Khazan Singh at a congregation held today at Namdhari Sikh Centre Southall. After an hour of naam simran, a special sangeet samelan began to commemorate the first anniversary and  celebrate the life of one of Satguru Ji's longest serving ragis.

Sant Khazan Singh who was associated with the sangat for more than 75 years died at the age of 84 on September 14 2001. He had great kirpa (blessings) of Sri Satguru Pratap Singh Ji under whom he learned his music. Sri Satguru Jagjit Singh Jis kirpa made him a house-hold name all over the world. Even a novice in music still remembers his gungroo routine during his tabla playing. A large number of people attended the congregation.

The samellan began with kirtan by Ustad Harbhajan Singh. He was accompanied Sant Satbachan Singh Deoora (vocals), Ragi Ranbir Singh (vocals) and by sarangi vadak Sant Surjeet Singh. On Tabla were master Dharampal Singh Reehal and Sant Narinderpal Singh Riyat. After a couple of shabads, Ustad Ji told the sangat about the unique duo of Ragi Khazan Singh Ji and Ragi Dharshan Singh ji and narrated some of his personal experiences with Rahi Khazan Singh Ji.

The Samellan carried on with: 

  • a solo tabla recital by sri Chander Mohan - a tabla player from Delhi. CM as he is more popularly known, is a disciple of Pandit Hiralal of Delhi gharana. He played various styles of the Delhi and Punjab Gharanas.

  • A sarangi and dilruba performance by Surjeet Singh (sarangi), Ranbir Singh (dilruba), Balbir Singh (tabla) and Hardeep Singh Raju (tanpura). Surjeet Singh rendered the rag saraswati.

  • the final item of the evening was rag Kirwani on the Santoor played by Southall's very own Kiranpal Singh Deeora. He was accompanied on tabla by Chander Mohan and the tanpura by Ranbir Singh.

The sangat was to witness the genius of Sant Khazan Singh ji in a video recording, displayed on a giant screen  Sant Khazan Singh was caught on camera in a sangats performance in the uk in the 1980's and the entire congregation was transfixed and amazed at his tabla playing. It was a befitting tribute to the champion tabla player. After the video show the performers and organizers was honored with siropaos on behalf of the sangat.
